Author Guidelines

Authors are encouraged to read the following guidelines carefully before preparing and submitting a manuscript to English Language Instruction Studies (ELIS). Compliance with these requirements will facilitate the editorial screening, peer-review process, and publication workflow. Manuscripts that do not conform to the journal’s formatting and submission requirements may be returned for revision prior to peer review.   • Manuscript Types

    English Language Instruction Studies (ELIS) publishes Original Research Articles, Systematic Literature Reviews, and Meta-analyses that contribute to the advancement of English language education, applied linguistics, educational technology, teacher education, language assessment, curriculum development, and related disciplines. Submitted manuscripts must present original, unpublished work that is not under consideration by another journal and should demonstrate academic rigor, methodological soundness, and clear contributions to theory, practice, or policy. All submissions undergo an initial editorial screening followed by a double-blind peer-review process.

    Manuscripts should be prepared using the official ELIS Article Template and written in clear academic English. The recommended manuscript length is 5,000–8,000 words, including the main text, tables, figures, and the reference list. Authors are expected to follow the journal’s formatting requirements and citation style (APA Style, 7th edition) to facilitate the review and publication process. Manuscripts that do not comply with the journal’s guidelines may be returned for revision before peer review.

  • Article Structure

    Authors must prepare their manuscripts using the official ELIS Article Template to ensure consistency in formatting and presentation. A complete manuscript should consist of the following components in the following order: Title, Author Information and Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Research Funding (if applicable), Artificial Intelligence (AI) Statement (if applicable), and References. Tables and figures should be placed as close as possible to their first citation in the text and formatted according to the journal’s requirements.

    Each section of the manuscript serves a distinct purpose and should be prepared in accordance with the instructions provided in the ELIS Article Template. Authors are encouraged to carefully follow the formatting specifications, section organization, and writing guidelines to facilitate the editorial screening, peer-review process, and publication workflow. Manuscripts that do not conform to the prescribed article structure or formatting requirements may be returned for revision prior to peer review.

  • Reference Style

    All manuscripts submitted to English Language Instruction Studies (ELIS) must follow the American Psychological Association (APA) Style, 7th edition for both in-text citations and the reference list. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all cited sources are accurate, complete, and consistently formatted according to APA guidelines. Every in-text citation must appear in the reference list, and every reference listed must be cited in the manuscript.

    Authors are encouraged to cite recent, relevant, and high-quality scholarly sources, with the references published within the last ten years. The use of reputable international journals is strongly recommended to ensure the scientific quality and currency of the manuscript. ELIS strongly encourages authors to use reference management software such as Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote to improve the consistency, accuracy, and efficiency of citation and reference formatting. However, authors remain fully responsible for verifying the completeness and correctness of all references before submitting their manuscripts.
  • Peer Review Process

    All manuscripts submitted to English Language Instruction Studies (ELIS) undergo a double-blind peer-review process to ensure academic quality, originality, and scientific integrity. Upon submission, each manuscript is first evaluated by the Editorial Office to determine its suitability with the journal’s aims and scope, adherence to the submission guidelines, and compliance with publication ethics. Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements may be returned to the authors for revision or declined before entering the peer-review stage.

    Manuscripts that successfully pass the initial editorial screening are assigned to at least two independent reviewers with relevant expertise in the subject area. Both the authors’ and reviewers’ identities remain anonymous throughout the review process. Reviewers evaluate the manuscript based on its originality, methodological rigor, significance of the findings, clarity of presentation, quality of analysis, and contribution to the field. Based on the reviewers’ recommendations, the Editor may issue one of the following decisions: Accept, Minor Revision, Major Revision, Resubmit for Review, or Reject. Authors are expected to address all reviewer comments carefully and submit a revised manuscript within the specified timeframe. The final publication decision is made solely by the Editor-in-Chief after considering the reviewers’ recommendations and the quality of the revised manuscript.
  • AI Policy

    English Language Instruction Studies (ELIS) permits the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist authors in improving language, grammar, readability, or manuscript organization. However, AI tools must not be credited as authors or co-authors and must not replace the authors’ intellectual contributions, critical analysis, interpretation of findings, or scientific judgment. Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and ethical compliance of their manuscripts. Any use of AI during manuscript preparation should be transparently disclosed in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Statement section, clearly indicating the purpose and extent of its use.

  • Article Processing Charge (APC)

    English Language Instruction Studies (ELIS) currently does not charge any Article Processing Charge (APC) for manuscript submission, editorial processing, peer review, or publication. Authors are not required to pay any fees at any stage of the publication process. This policy reflects the journal’s commitment to supporting the dissemination of high-quality scholarly research and promoting equitable access to academic publishing regardless of authors’ institutional or financial backgrounds.

    All submitted manuscripts are evaluated solely on their academic merit, originality, methodological rigor, and relevance to the journal’s scope through a rigorous double-blind peer-review process. ELIS remains committed to maintaining high editorial standards while providing a fee-free publishing service. Should the journal’s APC policy change in the future, any revisions will be announced in advance through the journal’s official website and will apply only to manuscripts submitted after the effective date of the new policy.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The manuscript is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • The manuscript falls within the Aims and Scope of ELIS.
  • The manuscript has been prepared using the official ELIS Article Template.
  • The manuscript is written in clear academic English and has been carefully proofread.
  • The title, abstract, keywords, and article structure comply with the journal’s formatting requirements.
  • All tables and figures are appropriately numbered, cited in the text, and formatted according to the journal guidelines.
  • All in-text citations and references follow APA Style (7th edition), and every citation appears in the reference list.
  • The reference list has been carefully checked for completeness and accuracy, including DOI information where available.
  • All authors have read and approved the final version of the manuscript and have agreed to its submission to ELIS.
  • The corresponding author accepts responsibility for all communications with the journal throughout the editorial and publication process.

Copyright Notice

By submitting a manuscript to ELIS, authors confirm that the submitted work is original, has not been published previously, and does not infringe upon the copyright or intellectual property rights of any third party. Authors are solely responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted materials, including figures, tables, photographs, or other copyrighted content incorporated into the manuscript. Authors also agree that, if the manuscript is accepted for publication, ELIS may publish, archive, index, and disseminate the article through electronic databases, indexing services, and other scholarly communication platforms while preserving the authors’ copyright ownership.

Privacy Statement

The names, email addresses, affiliations, and other personal information provided to English Language Instruction Studies (ELIS) will be used exclusively for the editorial, peer-review, publication, and journal management processes. This information will be treated as confidential and will not be shared, sold, or disclosed to any third party for commercial or unrelated purposes without the consent of the individuals concerned, except where required by law or necessary for publication and indexing services. ELIS is committed to protecting the privacy and security of authors, reviewers, editors, and readers in accordance with internationally accepted standards of scholarly publishing.
